Frequently Asked Questions
What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a highly evolved non-invasive cosmetic tattoo that replicates hair follicles with a micro needle and pigment in the skin. This creates impressions that simulate the realism of shaved stubble. No matter what your hair loss level is, we can create the full natural look of a shaved head (buzz cut) with a custom natural hairline.
Can I keep the hair that I have left a little longer?
The only upkeep to full Scalp Micropigmentation is keeping it buzzed down. This ensures the length stays even all over with a natural seamless blend of impressions into the hair follicles. If you have enough long hair all over your scalp, then density can be done to give it a thicker fuller look.
How long does Scalp Micropigmentation last?
Scalp Micropigmentation is considered a permanent solution for hair loss and lasts up to 6-8 years. That doesn’t mean it’s completely gone after that time frame. It just lightens with natural skin exfoliation. A minor touch up is done to replace what lightened or faded for many more years of realism.
How many sessions are required?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a 3-4 session layering process. This density layering process is key in building a natural dense scalp matching your actual shaved follicles for a seamlessly blended undetectable result. The second session is 2 weeks after the first. The third session is 3-4 weeks after the second. These time frames are to allow the pigment and skin to fully settle and heal properly. An assessment is done 6-8 weeks later to see if a 4th session touch up is needed which is very rare.
How do I choose my hairline?
I have techniques on how I can find exactly how your hairline was shaped. Then it is properly receded to your age. I also have 6 years of experience designing the perfect hairlines to properly frame your face for symmetry and naturalism. Each one is fully customizable and can be tweaked over each session if needed.
When should a touch up be done?
Touch ups are usually done every 3-5 years or more. I have many clients I haven’t done any touch ups on in 6 years since Scalp Micropigmentation looks more and more natural as it settles in with time. It’s a personal preference with each client.
Will the pigment change colour?
Here at RK Scalp I use a carbon based non-toxic organic pigment that contains no colourants, metals, or additives, diluted to match the proper shade to your skin tone and hair colour.
This is completely different from rich concentrated tattoo inks that contain additives, colourants, and oxide metals like iron oxide and titanium oxide which can oxidize as time goes by and change colour. The concentrated undiluted tattoo ink looks darker and more saturated.
The carbon based black pigment I use will not change colour with proper dilution matching your skin tone and hair colour with proper needle pressure. It will only lighten, not discolour. It maintains a realistic natural shade matching your shaved hair stubble.
Is it painful?
Scalp Micropigmentation is not as deep in the skin as a regular tattoo. Because of this more shallow depth in the papillary layer, the pain is way less intense and more like a slight pinching sensation. Many have told me it’s like an annoying tickle. In over 6 years I’ve never had anyone unable to complete a session as it is 100% non-invasive. There is no discomfort after a session.
What is the difference between traditional tattooing and Scalp Micropigmentation?
Traditional tattooing is more invasive as the depth of the needle goes deep below the dermis into the reticular layer more than 2mm for line work and shading with dark saturation.
Scalp Micropigmentation is at the very top of the dermis in the papillary layer just below the epidermis at around 1.2 – 1.4mm with lighter taps in the skin making small micro impressions. This is known as the sweet spot and is also why Scalp Micropigmentation looks so natural and is considered a non-invasive non-surgical option.
I also use a carbon based organic non-toxic black pigment much more diluted than common concentrated tattoo inks. That is why it won’t discolour or look too dark or saturated.
What if I’m very light skinned or very dark skinned?
It doesn’t matter what ethnicity you are or what your skin tone is, I can mix the proper shade of pigment to match your skin tone and hair colour for the most natural result.
Can I still take Finasteride or Propecia and Rogaine during my treatments?
Finasteride or Propecia can be taken orally during and after your treatments with no issues. Topical Rogaine foam should be stopped during the treatment and then continued 30 days after your last session. This makes sure the chemicals in the foam don’t interfere with the proper settling of the pigment while it heals.
What if later my hair turns grey?
If a client’s hair turns grey, no touch ups are done after the pigment lightens. Then when a touch up is required, a much lighter diluted shade is used to match the lighter hair colour. Also understand that all hair stubble when shaved down is a shade of charcoal grey or black, whether that is lighter or darker it can always be matched up with a proper shade for blended realism.
Can this procedure cover my transplant scar?
Yes it can. By using the same follicle replication technique, impressions can be blended over the scar into the shaved hair to camouflage and conceal the scar.
When can I go back to the gym and sweat?
I always recommend at least 5-6 days of letting the scalp settle and heal before any heavy sweating.
What about pools and saunas?
It’s best to avoid chlorinated pools, saunas and steam rooms for at least 28-30 days after your final treatment so it doesn’t interfere with the settling and healing of your treatment. Fresh water lakes at the beach are fine after 7 days.
What sets you apart from other artists?
I have over 6 years of experience with thousands of treatments performed with multiple awards from around the globe and some of the most natural undetectable results in the world. But above all, my love and passion for seeing lives changed and happiness restored. That is why I do this.
How much is a consultation?
Consultations are always free and usually last around a half hour to go over the details and any other questions you may have.
What is the cost?
This is based on the client’s personal needs and the size of their job. The Norwood scale shows the levels of male pattern baldness and these levels determine the price. A normal range would be anywhere from $1,000 – $4,000 depending on the work needed and what level the client is.
Compared to all other options that require constant money, tedious upkeep, or much larger sums of money, it is the most cost effective permanent solution in the world.
Will anyone notice it?
What I hear the most from every client is the fact that not even their own family can tell or detect it. My technique and finished result is 100% undetectable even up close magnified. No one will know. The only issues you’ll have is looking younger and your confidence going up through the roof. Guaranteed.
Will I like it?
I can 100% guarantee that you will love it and that your life will change. So many have told me it’s the best decision they ever made and they wish they did it way sooner.
New smiles. New confidence. New way of life. It would be my honour to help change yours.
